Matangi Leads Polo Enthusiasts in the Waikato
March Tourney will See 120 Ponies in Action KEEN INTEREST SHOWN (From Our Own Correspondent) CAMBRIDGE, Thursday. Keen interest is being shown in the forthcoming polo tournament, which is to be held at Cambridge on March 18. It is expected that there will be 120 ponies in action. Lovers of good horseflesh and exhilarating and exciting sport have a treat in store on this occasion. The gathering will be held on Mr. Jas. Taylor’s fine grounds, "Bdrdowie,” Cambridge. Among the competitors at the coming tourney will be five teams from Matangi tlio Matangi people are splendid sports, and very keen on polo —three from Cambridge, and two from the recently-formed Waimai Club, which is taking the place of the old Waingaro Club. On Saturday last two challenges issued by the Cambridge Club were decided on the Matangi grounds, in the presence of a large number of interested spectators. Cambridge B team defeated Matangi B for the Somers Cup by two goals to one, after an exciting game. Cambridge was unfortunate to lose G. Vosper, who suffered an injury to his hand. The Cambridge A grade players challenged Matangi for the Abbott Cup, but were defeated by Matangi by five games to four, after a thrilling contest. Matangi scored the winning goal exactly on the call of time. As a result of these contests interest is running high, and it has been decided to have another series of matches at Cambridge on Saturday, February 23, when the Cameron and Somers Cups will be played for: also a. contest for trophies presented by Messrs. Hines and McNicol.
