The first move in the coal-owners’ threatened action. following the breakdown of negotiations with the men. was made yesterday, when the miners at the Bellbird Colliery, Cessnock. received notice of dismissal. It was stated that the men at the other mines will receive their notices when the pay is distributed to-day. At Canberra, the Prime Minister, the Hon. Stanley Bruce, received a deputation from the Coal Miners' Federation. which asked for a comprehensive inquiry into the coal industry. He refused the request, but added that the Commonwealth would grant a subsidy of Isa ton on all coal exported from New South Wales to other States, providing the State Government granted a similar concession.
