TAMAKI BRIDGE SCHEME LAST EVENING’S MEETING In consequence of the receipt of a letter from the liquidators of the Otaliuliu Public Hall Company, received at last night’s meeting or the Otaliuhu Borough Council, accepting £SO deposit for option for the purchase of the public hall at Otahuhu, the town clerk was instructed to apply to the Local Bodies Government Loans Board for permission to raise the necessary money to purchase the hall. After a heated discussion it was decided to grant licences to the Otahuhu Service Station for the erection of two benzine bowsers, in front of its property in Great South Road, the sites for the pumps to be decided on by the special committee consisting of Messrs. R. B. Todd, Mayor, T. Clements and H. Hall. Demolition orders were enforced in regard to two dwellings occupied by Chinese in Waters Street. Closing orders were enforced in reference to dwellings owned by Mr. F. Potter and occupied by Hindus. It was agreed to suspend the order for seven days, on condition that suitable sanitary arrangements be made, and the dwellings are to be thoroughly cleaned up. In consequence of a letter from the Manukau County Council regarding temporary repairs being effected to the Tamaki Bridge, the foreman was instructed to prepare plans and specifications of the proposed work, and submit same to the Highways Board. The estimated cost of the work is £3OO, £2OO of which will be contributed by the Highways Board, £6O by the Otahuhu Council, and £4O by the Manukau County Council. An account totalling £6 12s 6d was passed for payment to the fire brigade, for services rendered by members of the brigade.
The Minister of Public Works advised that the council’s request for assistance toward the cost of widening ,the approaches to the Tamaki Bridge had been referred to the chairman of the Main Highways Board for consideration.
An application by the Auckland Gas Company for a licence to rent the demonstration room in Otahuhu for functions was referred to tlie building inspector for report.
The pumping engineer reported that 4,461.000 gallons of water had been pumped for the past three weeks.
