BOLT THWARTS BURGLARS

CITY FACTORY ENTERED THIEVES GET NOTHING A jammed bolt prevented burglars who visited the premises of Grey and Menzies, mineral water manufacturers, Eden Crescent, either last night or early this morning, from obtaining possession of about £SO in cash. Nothing else was taken. Entrance was gained by the back window of the main office, through which the intruders passed to the despatch office, where an assault was made on the safe. Gelignite was used to force the safe, and putty was used for muffling. The safe was fitted with three bolts, and the explosion jammed one, which prevented it from opening. Attempts were made to force it open with levers, but owing to the position in a corner of the room the attempt failed. A parcel of putty was the only thing the intruders left behind them. No attempt was made on the safes in the main office, which were not disturbed in any way. The premises were closed at about 7.30 last evening, and the attempted burglary was discovered at about seven o’cock this morning. In the opinion of Mr. Allan Menzies, the burglary was the work of someone acquainted with the office. This is borne out by the fact that the main safes were untouched, and attempts confined to the despatch safe, j which contained the money. The j window through which the entrance j was gained is out of sight, and further proves Mr. Menzies’s theory.
