CAPTAIN W. MANNING DEAD Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. The death occurred yesterday of Captain Walter Manning, one of the best known masters in the employ of the Union Company. He retired in 1918 after 3G years’ service as a master mariner, 23 years of which were spent in the Welling-ton-Lyttelton ferry service. Born in London he was apprenticed to the engineering trade, but took to sea life and came to New Zealand in 1873. joining the Union Company in ISSO. He commanded the Maori from 1907 till his retirement in his 75th year.
