With his usual commendable promptitude, Handicapper Gooseman has announced his adjustments for the forthcoming Otahuhu trotting carnival, and generally speaking, the Waikato expert has made a good job of the task. The Cup is already creating much interest, and it is conceded on all sides that the V ictoria n mare Glideaway looks the pick of the handicap. The consistent performances of the Directaway mare at Epsom during the Christmas meeting and her subsequent victory at Dunedin last month certainly lend colour to this opinion, and in being placed on 4.31 alter her attractive victory in the Dunedin Cup off 4.32 suggests that Tomkinson’s mare has not been harshly treated, and being one of the genuine stayers in the field, she must take all sorts of beating. Nevertheless, as the handicap is framed, the contest will be a stirring one, and there are several engaged with recent good form to bring them well into the picture on February 23. The Front Line On the front is Lady Dunmore, Real Light, Harvest Child, Nelson Tasker and Jean McElwyn, all of whom can show a bold front. The latter put up two fine efforts at Forbury Bark, and as she is a mare that .races best off the end, a repetition of that form can be looked for. Harvest Child can stay well, and gave the crack Roi L'Or a big tussle lust month, just being beaten by a narrow margin.
