Laughing Prince Burns the Track

Late Turf

RECORD MILE GALLOP GLENARTNEY IN THE PICTURE (Special to THE SUNi WANGANUI, To-day. Track watchers at Wanganui this morning had something to ponder over when Laughing Prince electrified them with a sensational gallop over a mile. Nothing like it has ever before been done on these tracks, and the result is that the son of Quantock and Martian Princess is assured ot' favouritism in the Cup to-morrow. It was after most of the early morning trials were done that the Fordelltrained horse came out with lightweight R. Marsh (weighing about 8.0) in the saddle to gallop on number one track, which was in perfect order. When he had got to the end of the first quarter in 25 3-5 it was realised that something warm was in store, and he confirmed this by cutting out the half mile in a tick over 50, the six furlongs was left behind in 1.15, and Laughing Prince finished up the straight, full of running, in a tick over 1.41. Timed from, the six-furlong post he ran the furlong in 12 4-5, quarter in 25 1-5, half a mile in 50, and the last six in 1.16. A TRACK RECORD Thus was recorded the fastest mile gallop ever done here. As a matter of fact it is 20 years ago since any horse broke 1.42, while the latter time was once credited to Client, a Wanganui Cup winner from the same stable as Laughing Prince. There were a few smart gallops, though nothing quite so sensational during this morning. Becky Sharp II went three in 38 2-5, after doing the first in 12 3-5, and Roi de Val took 38 4-5 for the last three of four. Rapine and Joy King took 51 3-5 for the last four of six, finishing strongly. Endorse went twice round at a good pace, finishing up by' running three in 36 3-5, the first furlong taking 12 1-5. Miss Ransom ran the last three of four in 37 1-5, taking 48 3-5 lor the full distance. A FAIR SEVEN Hynanna and Keddar (well out) ran seven furlongs, which they were clocked to cover in 1.31 3-5. Timed from the six-furlong post they ran the first two in 25 3-5, half in 51, and six in 1.18 2-5. Keddar went well, but Hynanna did not impress as being a danger for the Cup favourite. Gascony covered five furlongs in 1.3, taking 12 1-5 for the first furlong, 24 for the two, and 36 2-5 for the three. In view of his Jackson Stakes engagement, it is satisfactory to know there is nothing wrong with him. Atareria and Home Made, clocked from the six-furlong post in a seven furlong gallop, covered the first quarter in 24 3-5, and the half in tick under 49. Avro, Cashier and High Falutin’ finished in that order over five furlongs in 1.2 2-5, the first three furlongs taking 37. Freehold and Glenartney finished practically together over four furlongs in 47 4-5, the first furlong taking 11 3-5 anc* the two furlongs 23 2-5. It was another sensational gallop, but they were not so far out as Laughing Prince was. It is expected that all six accept-

ors will start in the Cup. though ther< may be a doubt as regards Brigh Glow. Sera tellings posted are as follow: Westmere Hurdles. —Royal Acre. Juvenile Handicap.—Oral. Petre Hack.—Cool Mint.

There is no gainsaying the brilliancy of Laughing Prince's gallop this morn - ing. The track upon which the trial took place has a very sharp bend going out of the straight, and another crossing the top. with less than a furlong straight iun to the finishing-point. In this effort | alone it looks as if the chestnut should win to-morrow’s Wanganui Cup. The ' gallop registered by Client, mentioned above, eventuated on the eve of the Wanganui Cup of 1921. and that fine horse was accompanied by Oratress. who a little over three months previously had won the New Zealand Cup. Oratress put S it well over Client in this try-out eight years ago. the time being 1.41 3-5. in the race the next day Oratress (H. Gray up) was made a hot favourite, while Client (M. McCarten). winner already of the Wanganui Cups of 1917 and ISIS, was third choice at a good price. Neither was able to win this time, despite their great trial, for Client was beaten by a length and a-quarter by the little-fan-cied Lovematch (the dam of that good sort Liaison), with Oratress out of a place. Incidentally, in the big race on the second day Client received such injuries necessitating his destruction, and lie was buried close to the scene of his many victories. Harking back to the chances of Laughing Prince in to-mor-row's contest, it cannot be forgotten that in the past top-weights have failed repeatedly in the Wanganui Cup, for only once in the history of the race has a horse with 9.0 or over scored. The lone I one was Dudu in IS9O. Two years ag » this record nearly went by the board j when Rapine (10.4 > failed by a head to reach Fiuthair (8.9), and was very unlucky. Perhaps the small field to-mor-row. will enable Laughing Prince to make Wanganui turf history.—"Earlv Bird.” WINGATUI GALLOPS NO OUTSTANDING EFFORTS Press Association DUNEDIN, To-day. ! The tracks at AVingatui were in firstclass order after a light shower through the night for the final gallops. Aussie and Limerick met for the first time on a course, but their efforts were confined to slow exercise on the plough. Limerick sprinted home over the last three furlongs in 42A. Paperchase ran six furlongs on the plough in 1.18 2-5. Full Feather and Starsliooter, on the same track, took 1.17 4-5. Prickles ran nine furlongs on the plough in 2.7 4-5, and Sudden Storm sprinted four furlongs along the back in 49. Court Jester beat Pangolin and Impertinence by a head over six furlongs in 1.19 4-5. Beau Geste and Troilus ran five on the plough in 1.4 4-5, and Count Cavour beat Amor over six in 1.18 2-5. Nincompoop beat Rapier over the same distance in 1.17 1-5, all on the plough. Rotor took 1.17 2-6 to cover the same course, and Royal Saxon ran a good seven in 1.30£. Paquito ran five in 1.4, and Waterlow four in 50. Toawai took 1.18 to cover six wide out. Pink Coat and Money Mine ran four wide out on the grass in 52, and Night Lad three on the plough in 38 2-5. Pink Note easily beat Eaton Bells over seven on the grass in 1.33 3-5. Silver Coot was stopping at the end of four in 52 3-5. Amorist beat Heisler over six on the plough in 1.20 3-5. Tunamoe and Shandre schooled over two hurdles. The latter nearly fell at the first, then out-jumped Tunamoe at the next.
