BISHOP AND DEAN
WAIKATO ANGLICANS’ DISPUTE
POSITION UNCHANGED (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Monday. Inquiries made to-day reveal that no further developments have eventuated in the situation involving Bishop Cherrington and a section of Anglican churchmen and Dean Barnett. It is known that the Bishop was delaying making a statement on the matter pending the receipt of a letter from the dean. In this letter, it is believed, was the dean’s answer to the proposition made at the conference on Saturday. The bishop stated to-day that he had received the advice he expected, but would not issue a statement. A well-informed churchman interpreted this as an indication that either the dean refused to accept a compromise offered by the bishop or the bishop’s advisers found themselves unable to recommend the bishop to adopt the suggestions for overcoming the difficulty offered by the dean. In other words, the position is unchanged. Further negotiations to effect a settlement between the parties are unlikely this week, owing to the absence of the bishop in the King Country. Bishop Cherrington has decided to place his services at the disposal of the Huntly parish, which is shortstaffed, every Sunday during Lent.
