Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Gane, of Cambridge, and Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Lewis, of Wellington, are guests at the Central Hotel.
Miss Eileen Gane has left Cambridge for Auckland, where she will be one of the sports mistresses at the Dioceson School.
Staying at the Royal Hotel are Mr. and Mrs. R. Scott, of Sydney, Hr. and Mrs. Drennan, of Dunedin. Miss A. Crawley, of Thames, Miss G. Grove, of Sydney, and Miss A. Clark, of Sydney.
Mrs. J. Craig, who has been the conductor of the choral branch of the New Plymouth Ladies’ Life-Saving Society, was also the recipient of a handsome present in recognition of her valuable services to the society.
AN AT HOME FOR ENGLISH VISITORS
LYCEUM CLUB ENTERTAINS The Lyceum Club lounge was the scene last night of a delightfully informal gathering, when a large and representative number of members attended to meet and entertain Sir John Hewett, G.C.5.1., K.8.E., C.1.E., Bailiff of the Grand Ci*oss and Baijiff of Egle, and his daughter, Mrs. St. John Atkinson, Dame of Grace, who have been touring New Zealand in an official capacity, and leave New Zealand today by the Niagara. Large bowls of tawny shaded dahlias and zinnias were used for decoration, together with autumn foliage and pots of puriri leaves and berries. In the absence of the president, Mrs. W. H. Parkes, Miss Ellen Melville, Mrs. J. C. Dickinson and Miss Janet Murray, vice-presidents, received the guests, who were made welcome by Miss Melville, and an entertaining programme was then presented. Under the direction of Mrs. Anne Scantlebury, an amusing one-act comedy. “Innocent and Annabel,” was produced, the parts being taken by Miss Vera Ziman, as the practical wife of an over-impressionable French husband (Mr. Jack Gordon), and Mrs. Estelle as the latest “affinity.” Miss Maida Hooker appeared as a maid. Several songs were sung by Miss Phyllis Hazell with her well-known charm of interpretation, and were warmly applauded. Miss Hooker acted as accompaniste. A delightful evening concluded with supper, which was served in the lounge, and members were enabled to meet the visitors. Mrs. St. John Atkinson wore a smart frock of peach pink satin beaute, made with a full-flared skirt, and relieved with jewelled ornaments. Mrs. Dickinson was in black georgette and lace, and wore a handsome embroidered ivory shawl. Miss Melville was in jade green georgette veiled with gold metal lace. Miss Murray wore a black frock studded with rhinestone embroidery. Mrs A. D. Campbell, Mayoress of Auckland, wore a chenille embossed georgette frock of blush pink and art shades of rose and blue. BRIDGE ON PIRATE SHIPPE,
A delightful bridge party was held yesterday afternoon at the Pirate Shippe, Milford. Those present were Mrs. Ben Goldwater, Mrs. Beaumont, Mrs. Pittman, Mrs. McDonald. Mrs. Paterson, Mrs. Joplin, Mrs. Findlay, Mrs. Wade, Mrs. Fraer, Mrs. McCready. Miss Jennings and Mrs. Norton. The card tables were placed on the cool lower deck and afternoon tea was served in the cafe.
