DARGAYILLE Dargaville territorials, under the command of Lieut. M. de R. Petrie, and cadets under Lieut. B. T. Jones, attended church parade at the Dargaville Anglican and Catholic Churches yesterday. The parade was headed by the North Auckland Regimental Band in charge of Lieut.-Bandmaster G. M. Kirton. The muster of troops totalled over 60. The North Auckland Regimental Band and a number of local territorials will leave Jargaville on Saturday for the Ngaruawahia camp, where they are to put in a week's training. In recognition of the splendid work done bv him as secretary of the recent sports. Mr. Neill McLeod -was presented by the Dargaville Cycle Club with a goldmounted fountain pen. Mr. Henry Neill made the presentation on behalf of the club. BIRKENHEAD SCHOOL The Birkenhead School Committee held its monthly meeting last evening, Mr. J. McDonald, chairman, presiding. Mr. A. G. Menzies, headmaster, reported that the following teachers have joined the staff as from February 4:—Miss Edna Wilson, relieving assistant; Miss Blanche Mueller, probationer assistant; Mr. E. B. Stillman and Mr. O. C. Stevenson, assistants and Mr. Stephen Hamilton, probationer. These take the places of Miss Lowrie, Miss Walker and Mr. F. P. Frean and Mr. Butler, who have been transferred. The school has lost 47 pupils, who have been promoted to the junior high school, but during the week there have been 25 admissions, the roll now standing at 340. It was decided the ask Mr. Burns, chairman of the Education Board, to make a presentation on behalf of the school to Miss Alexandrina MacDonald, who will be retiring from the services after next month, having served six years at the Birkenhead School and 30 years under the Education Board. Mr. D. E. Leslie, inspector of schools, reported that the school is effectively managed and controlled, the children are well-behaved and there is a pleasing spirit of work throughout. The probationers are receiving systematic and efficient training. The accommodation is sufficient, and the extensive excavation and ground improvement work which have been carried out, reflects credit upon all concerned.
It was decided to ask three representatives from Birkdale, Glenfield and Northcote Schools to meet representatives from Birkenhead School in a conference to try and get a dental clinic for the district.
TO FLA AT SUVA. —The Union Company’s Island steamer Tofua reached Suva from Apia at midnight last night. She is to sail on Thursday, and is due at Auckland next Monday.
HERMINIUS FROM ANTWERP—A. S. Paterson and Co., Ltd., has received advice that the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Herminius is now due at Auckland from Antwerp on March 1. She has a cargo of basic slag, all of which will be unloaded at this port. CANADIAN CONQUEROR REPORTS —Wireless advice received from the Canadian National steamer Canadian Conqueror states she will arrive from Halifax to-morrow afternoon. She has general merchandise for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru. Dunedin and Bluff Cargo for Auckland will be unloaded at Prince’s Wharf. After completion of discharge at Southern ports the vessel is to load in New Zealand and she is to be dispatched finally from Auckland for New York, Boston and Halifax on March 6. P.- AND O. PROFITS INCREASED. — The profits of the P. and O. Steam Navigation Company have again increased. For the year ended September 30, 1927, thev were £918,001; for the 12 months which have just been completed they are (including £188,327, brought forward) £923,029. This figure has been arrived at after providing for depreciation, adding £92,050 to the reserve fund (bringing it up to £1,700,000), and setting aside the premium of £1.000,000 received on the issue of new deferred stock to be used for new tonnage construction. TRANSPACIFIC CARGO SERVICE. — The Wairuna clears Suva on February 20 for Fanning Island and Vancouver, and is due at Vancouver on March 16.
The Waikawa clears Bluff to-morrow for New Plymouth, thence Sydney, Newcastle and Vancouver. The Hauraki, which left Wellington on February 7, is due at Melbourne to-mor-row, and proceeds thence to Adelaide, Sydney and Vancouver. The Waitemata, which left Los Angeles on February 3, is due at Auckland on February 27, thence to Wellington. Melbourne and Sydney. The Waihemo clears New Westminster (8.C.) to-morrow for San Francisco and Los Angeles, to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney. She clears Los Angeles on February 22.
NIAGARA SAILING. —In continuation of her voyage from Sydney, the Union Company’s R.M.S. Niagara is leaving Auckland at 1 o’clock this afternoon for Suva, Honolulu, Victoria and Vancouver. Albertson, has informed the Taumarunui County Council that a scheme had been prepared to allow of the Main Highways Board taking over the maintenance of the Taumarunui-Te Kuiti Main Highway, part of which runs through the county. Though no suggestion was mede that the council's portion was neglected, there were lone stretches of the road that were in bad order. If the scheme met with the approval of the lpcal bodies concerned, -.he council would be asked to pay £2O a mile per annum toward its share of the Highways Board’s expenses on the route. It was resolved that the county offer to contribute at the rate of £lO a -mile.
