SAME OLD POLICY
CRITICISM OF TRANSPORT BOARD
SERVICE TO OUTER DISTRICTS
“Cr. F. S. Morton is fighting a hard fight on the Transport Board for the outlying districts and I think this council should express its appreciation of his efforts,” said Cr. R. G. Speight at last, evening’s meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council. He moved that this council place on record its appreciation of Cr. F. S. Morton’s efforts in furthering the interests of transport in OnehLinga and the outlying districts of the Transport Board’s territory. The Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, said that Cr. Morton was a good fighter in a good cause and was doing excellent work on the Transport Board. On the motion being unanimously carried Cr. Morton assured the council that the position of an “outside” representative on the board was anything but pleasant. “The policy that is being pursued to-day,” he said, “is the self-same policy as that adopted by the old City Tramways Committee and that policy does not meet with the approval of the outsiders.”
They were told that the patronage accorded the Manukau Road tram service did not warrant an increase in the number of cars, but it would be news to the council to learn that in a recent tally taken at the Owen’s Road intersection no fewer than 14,100 passengers were carried past that point in one day, or a total of 5,000,000 in a year. He also referred to the meagre service to Onehunga as compared with that to Remuera and contended that the board was established so that its benefits might accrue to the whole of the people under its control and not to any one special section thereof.
