“SCARLET SEAS”
RICHARD BARTHELMESS AGAIN Richard Barthelmess is so consistently good an actor that one should no longer be surprised at his versatility. In “Scarlet Seas” his great diversity of talent is mire than ever apparent and he makes his role stand out from the screen in an amazingly vivid manner. He is fine as the hardened youngster sailing the heavenly seas of the Pacific in the crudest brand of “hell-ship.” The story sweeps swiftly back from, life aboard ship to the hectic gayety of dance halls and the forced lures of painted sirens, and back again to the enactment of the thrilling climax, a mutiny that is realism personified. Betty Compson as a dancer who yearns for better things—and finds them—acts with her usual verve and finish and gives a splendid performance. “Scarlet Seas” is in every sense an outstandingly interesting production.
