EXCITING CHASE

JOYRIDE INTERRUPTED GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS Following an exciting chase through Epsom and Remuera, after Mr. G. Shipherd had seen a youth driving his car which had been taken from outside the Newmarket station, Thomas John Stanaway appeared at the Pojice Court yesterday charged with converting the car to his own use. Air. Shipherd left his car outside the Newmarket station, and after 10 minutes’ absence found it had been removed. He reported the occurrence to the Newmarket police and caught a tram to go home. Near the Epsom depot Mr. Shipherd saw his car being driven back toward Newmarket. He leapt from the car, and enlisting the aid of a passing motorist, gave chase along Alanukau Road and Alarket Road to Remuera. At the intersection of Remuera Road, the fleeing motorist was forced to give way to a tram. Mr. Shipherd ran forward, jumped on the running-board, and overpowered the youthful driver, whom he took to the Newmarket poiice station. This morning, Stanaway, a motordriver, aged 20, pleaded guilty to converting a car valued at £4OO to his own use. “He has been previously convicted on a similar charge,” commented Senior-Sergeant O’Grady. Air. W. R. McKean, S.M.: I see he got three months then; it does not seem to have been much of a deterrent. . Sentence of three months’ imprisonment was imposed.
