In the Market Place
FRUIT RATES FIRM PLUMS PLENTIFUL Most lines of fruit were offering at firm rates in the City Markets to-day. Plums are plentiful, and a late variety, Doris, is now being offered. The quality is generally good. Peaches eased a fraction to-day on yesterday’s values. There is still a steady inquiry. VECTARINES are selling at high coming forward. Tomatoes are still in over-supply and It is impossible to clear the poorer grades. Apples are coming forward freely. In the vegetable market, potatoes are still mostly of poor quality and prices are low. The few sound lines appearing are being sought by buyers. Cucumbers continue to be in oversupply. MINING NEWS „,,A L fVR NI A.—The manager’ reports:— T « he^ drl ??, north on the footwall branch . the »Orlando reef has been extended 6ft, a total of 76ft from the crosscut at the winze.. The reef here averages sft wide, and is still a strong body of stone, and looks well, carrying all the mineral for making gold. Colours of gold are still seen in the ore. The country rock on both walls is still of a splendid class, interlaced with quartz stringers and bright mineral veins. The winze on the Orlando reef on the hanging wall branch has the pump installed, and water has been lowered to a depth of 30ft, leaving another 10ft of water to pump out of the bottom. The winch and brace of L winze and new guides are all ready for sinking as soon as the water is out. The crosscut east from the top of the rise on the dropper off the Sons of Freedom reef has been extended 4ft, a total of 40ft The country rock here is still of a firm nature, and a good class for carrying reefs. A start has been made to drive north on the small leader cut in this crosscut. The leader averages 2in wide and the quartz looks well. The drive north on the main Sons of Freedom reef from the top of the rise has been extended 3ft, a total of 15ft. The reef here averages sft wide, and is a fine body of stone, carrying mineral blend and silica, and looks well for making gold. A rise has been started from the face of this drive to connect with the 70ft level, and has been risen 3ft, a total of 3?t. The reef here averages sft wide, and also looks very well. In about 35ft of rising we should hole through to the 70ft level. LUCKY SHOT.—The manager reports: ‘The contractors completed the low level contract on Wednesdav, February 6, and started rising on contract to connect with the Mo. 1 winze. The rise is being carried up on the cross reef which is 2ft wide and is showing very favourable mineral indications, with a good gold-bearing class of andesite on both walls. The No. 1 winze has been sunk 3ft. Most of the past week has been confined to timbering. There has been no change in the reef here since last report. The crushing of the trial parcel of 50 tons of ore was finished to-dav and the retorting of the bullion will * take place or. Monday.”
