TROTTING

By “Abaydos.” EPSOM ACTIVITIES

SATURDAY’S TRY-OUTS

track in good order The track at Alexandra Park on Saturday morninq was in aood order for fast work*, and several trainers took the opportunity of speeding up their candidates, some interesting bouts being witnessed. May Go South Tiger Salve and Nelson Dillon were the first to stir up the dust, and the pair worked a mile and a-half at a sound bat. The trotter never put a foot wrong and gave a nice display, w'hile the pacer, after warming up to his work, infused plenty of dash into the effort. C. G. Lee may take these two to Wellington. Fine Trotting Display A fine exhibition of straight-out trotting was given by Raima and Great Change in a useful work-out over 12 furlongs. They kept well together over the journey, running home over the last half at a solid clip. Raima is in great nick, and Great Change appears to have benefited by inis recent letup. Torpedo Huon Improving Native Prince had Torpedo Huon and Warplane as companions in a task over the middle distance, the trio pacing truly. The pace was increased when the four-furlong post was passed the last time, and Torpedo Huon doing his work attractively finished with Native Prince, Warplar e being several lengths back at the box. The Australian horse is coming to hand nicely. Still Going Strong On his lonesome the aged pacer All Bell, without any encumbrances, reeled off a mile smartly. He was inclined to loaf on the journey, but W. Cockbill sooled him along the last half mile, which the old chap traversed in good time. The Gold Bell gelding is well forward.

A Pleasing Effort Rolfe Audubon conceded Halgana about twelve yards in a bout over ten furlongs, but failed to top her off at the finish, although he paced solidly. There was no real spe id required till four furlongs from home, and the mare putting her heart into the work went well enough to be in front when the line was crossed. Halgana gave an improved display. The Shrew in Form

The Shrew, Jackie Audubon and Medusa hopped off at Ihe twelve-fur-long disc, and with half a mile gone Jackie was acting as pacemaker. Medusa bringing up the recr. At the end of the mile The Shrew was on terms with the leader. Medusa close up, but in the run down the straight. The Shrew, finishing full of running, passed the post a couple of lengths in front of Medusa, with Jackie Audubon, who did not finish strongly, a similar distance away. Team in Good Order

Horizon, assisted by a galloping companion, was allotted a mile and ahalf effort, which he tackled in bold style. The big pacer made no faults, and although he had quite enough by the time the post was reached, got through the task creditably. Van Rich and Billy Carbine, other well-condi-tioned members of G. Robertson’s team, also executed pleasing essays over several circuits in solo fashion.

Interesting Bout All eyes were on The Abbey and Dillon Huon as they lined up at the twomile post for dispatch over the Cup distance. Dillon Huon was slower than his rival in striking the straps, but at the end of two furlongs was going nicely close behind the leader. The pace increased at the end of a mile and the final four furlongs were fairly warm, Dillon Huon, on the outer, being level with The Abbey at this point. A good run ensued to the box. The Abbey having slightly the better of the finish.

Promising Novice Uncle Bert, The Tartar and Peggy de Or were associated in a pleasing work-out over a mile and a-half, in which the novice acquitted herself most creditably. While none of the performers were looking to put up time, it was a sound effort, The Tartar showing a lot of speed over the final quarter, finishing strongly in front on the outside. Uncle Bert was always going steadily, and he is getting back to his best form.

The paucity of competitors reveals the fact that high-class trotters are scarce in the Dominion at the present time, and progressive clubs who cater for the very best are up against it with small entries and scanty fields. However, the contests prove decidedly interesting and spectators show appreciation of the efforts to secure the classy trotters by their solid support on the day. Armstrong Handicap

On the front of the handicap under review is the improving Happy Rosa, and her recent essays suggest that Tomkinson’s trotter will play a prominent part in the decision of the race. With her is Napland, now under H. Kinnimont’s care at Epsom, and if he reproduces his Christmas effort, Napland has a royal chance of giving the Royal Oak horseman a winning drive. Twelve yards back is that solid horse Tiger Salve, and if the Hutt Park footing is dry on Saturday it will take a real good one to head him off.

“Togo” Lee has the Rock Huon gelding in good shape and he knows just how to handle him to perfection, and those behind him will be kept busy. Kempton and Sister Beatrice are a nice pair on 48yds, and the former’s consistency of late will cause him to be in -strong demand. Sister Beatrice was on the improve when last seen out at Wellington, and the Hawera mare will put up a big fight on Saturday. Trampfast won so brilliantly and comfortably last week end at Addington
