SUBURBAN CRICKET SURPRISE

Two Big Wins Recorded

THE second series of the second round of the Suburban Cricket Association's senior competition was concluded at the Domain on Saturday. Ponsonby beat Harbour Board by 12S runs on the first innings. Ellerslie defeated Glen Eden by 331 on tlie first innings and Green Lane beat Victoria bv 52.

There was little spectacular batting:, compared with Ellerslie’s 500 of the lirst day of the match, but Fletcher for Ponsonby. scored a satisfactory 87 in about an hour and a half. Clarke, for Glen Eden, made 51, and Turner, of Victoria, hit up 49. Cox, for Green Lane, was responsible for Victoria's downfall at the crease. He bowled steadily and trickily all the afternoon, and finished with an average of seven wickets for 39 runs. Mann, of Harbour Board, bowled well in the latter part of Ponsonby’s innings, and secured four wickets for 32 runs, while Hollis, for Ellerslie, took two for IS against Glen Eden. Harbour Board is still leading on points in the competition in spite of its defeat at the hands of Ponsonby. The team that was next in order was Victoria, but it was also beaten, and the wins of Ponsonby and Ellerslie brought their totals up to second and third respectively. The present positions of the teams are as follow: Cham.

PONSONBY BATS WELL

HARBOUR BOARD BEATEN STILL LEADING IN POINTS Ponsonby had no difficulty in decisively defeating Harbour Board in the last day of the match on Saturday. The Board made only 129 in the first innings, and by the end of the first day’s play Ponsonby had already hit up 105 for four wickets. In less than an hour’s play on Saturday the score was passed, and by the time that Ponsonby was all out at about four o'clock the side had scored 257.

The innings of the day was Fletcher’s. In an hour and a-half of pretty batting he hit up 87 runs. He was helped at first by an excellent partner, Blair, who scored a well-de-served and patient 41 and the two gave a delightful displa3 r of finished batting. The team’s greatest fault was in its tail, which showed up only too clearly on Saturday, the last four men only adding 11 to the score. Otherwise they •would be an excellent all-round combination.

Harbour Board fielded disappointingly and “extras” managed, in some way or other, to score 24. Martin and Dunning seem to have lost all their old sting with the ball, and only succeeded in getting one wicket apiece for a combined total of over 100 runs. Mann was the only bowler showing any promise and be had to be content with four wickets for 32 runs—a good average, but not to be compared with some of the Harbour Board bowling earlier In the season. THREE-POINT WIN

NO TROUBLE FOR ELLERSLIE

Compiling a score of 500 on the previous Saturday, Ellerslie declared the innings closed with four wickets down on Saturday. The Glen made a poor response to this total, and its innings closed for 169, of which the principal scores were Clarke 51, Mormon 42, and Anderson 36. Mormon played a good steady innings, he and Anderson being responsible for over 60 runs during their partnership.

The absence of E. McNeil and Richardson was a stroke of bad luck for ihe Glen men for. although it is unlikely that they would have passed .‘-.llerslie s total. it would not have closed the innings so early without giving Glen Eden a fighting chance. After tea Glen Eden followed on for its second knock, but it was not to be expected that that would reach Ellerslie’s total of 500, and they did well to get 141. ith Glen Eden’s second inning’s

GREEN LANE WINS

When stumps were drawn on the first day Victoria had four wickets down for 78 and there seemed to be a likelihood that they would pass the first innings total of 173 compiled by Green Lane. However, the Victorian “tail” refused to wag and the last six wickets fell for 36.

In Green Lane's second innings Clive Watts settled down to solid rungetting and at the end of the days play was 106 not out. Cox proved to be Victoria’s stumbling block, the coach’s deliveries tempting the younger men to take chances. Green Lane won on the first innings.
