FULL-WIDTH BRIDGES

HIGHWAYS BOARD DECISION

MT. WELLINGTON SUBSIDY

At a special meeting this morning ihe Main Highways Board discussed the question of tho type of bridges to be built on the main highways now under reconstruction north of Auckland. and decided that all the bridges be built to carry two-way traffic. This question has been causing some apprehension among motorists owing to the earlier decision of the board to build the narrower class of bridge which would barely allow of vehicles passing. Waiwera being one of them. The board’s decision this morning means that none of tlie bridges will be less than 18ft wide. The board favourably considered an application by the Mount Wellington Road Board for a £3 to X 1 subsidy for reconstruction of the shoulders on the concrete in the board’s area, and made the grant. The board also agreed to authorise the necessary extra funds to allow' the sand-stoning of the Ruawai-Dargaville .Mrl to be completed during the present construction period.
