GRAVE RIOTS IN INDIA SOLDIERS SENT TO BOMBAY (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 11.50 a.m. COLOMBO, Friday. COLOMBO, Friday. Clear proof of the Communist inspiration in the Colombo riots was given in the Legislative Assembly to-day, when the Colonial Secretary, Mr. A. G. Fletcher stated that Labour supporters took no hand in the disturbances. Thu police had fired in self-defence. He paid a tribute to the admirable manner in which the police had behaved throughout the riots. The police sentry at the Governor’s residence was stoned last night. Otherwise the position is quiet. A message from Delhi says that further riots occurred in Bombay yesterday. The situation is still grave. The First Battalion of the Cheshire Regiment from Poona has been drafted into the city. The total casualties were 33 persons killed and over 200 injured. A Pathan armed with a knife killed four Hindus. Many arrests have been made by the military and the police. The Legislative Assembly at Delhi gave a second reading to the Public Safety Bill, which was carried by 61 votes to 50. The final vote was undoubtedly influenced by the tragic happenings at Bombay.
