UNDERGROUND RAILWAY
MINISTER TO INSPECT WILL PROJECT BE DROPPED To-morrow the Alinister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, will inspect the route of the proposed railway which will run under Auckland. He will be accompanied by the general manager of railways, Mr. H. H. Sterling, and other officials. The underground railway, which has bee t under consideration for some time, has become a difficult problem and it is thought in some quarters that the project may be dropped for a time. The original proposal was to tunnel under the city, beginning at Beach Road, opposite the new railway station, and emerging at Alorningside. This new outlet would shorten the northward route considerably. Apparently the question of costs has altered the original scheme and it is thought that the Alinister will give this his consideration. Officers of the railway department are still surveying the route.
