PATOU LOOKS AHEAD
STYLES AND COLOURS MANY NOVELTIES In regard to forthcoming fashions, as far as materials are concerned, Jean Patou says we shall see something rather new in the shape of a printed velvet, rather sober in colour and design, out of which both the dress and the wrap will be made. Another novelty, which strikes him as being rather in the nature of an experiment, is to make dresses out of fancy silks of the kind used for men’s neck-ties. Printed silk velvet will be the dominant note. In addition to these, of course, we shall have satin crepes in all the usual colours, fleur de soie, crepe de chine, and plain velvets, for afternoon dresses, and, for evening gowns, crepe georgette, silk chiffon, satin crepe and lames. In this category we may also include the lace dress, which is always popular in Paris, and we shall see many examples of the dalmatic in evening ensembles. In the matter of colours, Patou’s novelty “light and dark,” which might be described as a kind of slate grey is mentioned. It was not obtained without considerable difficulty, and is a very refined colour, which will certainly be popular, not only for afternoon, hut for evening frocks, as it looks equally well in silk, velvet or linen fabrics. To sum up his impression of the styles of 1929, he says that thev will be rich and varied as far as coats are concerned. Dresses will be worn longer, and include those for afternoon wear. The general outline will bear a considerable resemblance to that of the period which began about ISSO and continued for several years afterwards.
