SMART YOUNGSTERS

AUSTRALIA’S BEST The Victorian two-year-old, Parkwood, and the locally owned Holdfast, have proved themselves Autstralia’s outstanding juveniles of the season, but each State also possesses another that has claims to consistency. For instance, Rebate recorded his two wins at Randwick like a good horse, and Toussaint’s record in Melbourne is a very creditable one. When beaten by Berneil at Epsom the Drake filly was considered unlucky, and when she won the Holiday Stakes at Caulfield that opinion was endorsed. She beat a good field of youngsters in attractive style at Caulfield, and she carried 9st 51b in the Juvenile Handicap at Williamstown on Monday week last. Few looked beyond her for the winner. The start was delayed through the fractiousness of Bethany and Mithras. As often happens in such cases, those that give most trouble secure the best of the start. Toussaint, who stood quietly at the machine, jumped away well, but a furlong or two had been covered before she ran into third place. At the home turn Bethany dropped back beaten, and Touissant ran up alongside Mithras. She then appeared likely to win easily, but Mithras struggled on gamely, and Touissant had to be ridden out to win. Mithras showed improvement on his recent form and this Great Star colt is worth keeping in mind.
