AMERICA’S HOPE REIGH COUNT’S BREEDING A lot has been written about the entry of the American colt, Reigli Count, for the Ascot Gold Cup. Most of this—writes “The Special Commissioner” in London “Sporting Life” — takes the tone that at last a horse has been found in America, of American bicod, that is good enough to compete with the best of ours. Wow, without disparaging the colt or his sporting owner, it is just as well to point out that he is every much as British-bred as any other horse that wiil go to the post. J3oth his sire and dam were actually foaled in England. The former, Sunreigh, was by Sundridge out of Sweet Briar, a St. Frusquin mare, that was bred in France in 1908, and imported in o this country, in foal, in 1919. The foal was Sunreigh, who was exported to the States with his dam, covered by Sunstar, the same year. Beppo’s Half-Sister Reigh Count’s dam, Contessina, is a half-sister to Beppo, by Count Schomberg out of Pitti, that was bred by Mr. James de Rothschild and was sold by him at the December Sales of 1916 for 209gns. She was then in foal to Bomba ard, after foaling, she left with her foal, and covered by Willonx, for America. Sunreigh—a brother, by the way, to Sun Briar—and Contessina, both belonged to Mr. W. S. Kilner, who bred Reigh Count and sold him privately for, it is said, £2,400 to his present owner, Airs. John D. Hertz, of Chicago. Last season Reigh Count won four races, which included the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, out of 14 starts. His full pedigree is appended. REIGH COUNT SIRE: Sunreigh, by Sundridge, son of Amphion, by Speculum or Roseberry, from Sweet Briar, by St. Frusquin (son of St. Simon) from Presentation, daughter of Orion and Dubia. DAM.: Contessina, by Count Schomberg, son of Aughrim, by Xenophon, from Pitti, by St. Frusquin from Florence, by Wisdom from Enigma.
