METROPOLITAN FIXTURE
To-Morrow's Card Reviewed
|’oß one day only—the shortest period of its sporting calendar-—flags will be flying at Adtlington to-morrow, the occasion being the presentation of the card for the summer fixture of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club It is a popular outing with Southern owners and provides light-harness enthusiasts with interesting sport. A review of the card by “Abaydos” follows.
TO-MORROWS card lias proved quite an attraction for owners, with the result the various events have filled well while the material engaged is of the class that will ensure keen contests and high-grade racing. The great majority of pacers and trotters taking part have been sporting iilk frequently of late, and there should bo no lack of condition on the part of contestants. As the fixture precedes the Wellington and Otahuhu meetings, the form displayed at Addington will be watched with keen interest by .North island followers of the pastime, as a number of those taking part in to-morrow’s function oro likelj to cross the Strait for the fixtures mentioned. When the tote bells tingle it will be the signal for speculators to make their selections for the SPREYDON HANDICAP. Of £300; 3.34 class; 1} miles. aim Wood . . Tim Wood is an old-timer, but if he reproduces a slice of his one time dash, the rest could have a view from the rear. Nelson Ata and Commander Bingen were winners recently and the latter should have good prospects. Western Voyage has not yet struck his correct form, but Lady Fan will find the race to her liking. Wild Hebe failed at Dunedin, but the company was tougher -b-.r, in this heat. Nelson McKinney and Nelson Boy are a solid pair over the Journey, and the latter may prove the more reliable at keeping to the oorrecfc gait. Our Lady is due for a win while Katute has shown a big improvement this season. Duke Bingen won this race last year from 72yds.
end being such a speedy customer may repeat the performance. Putmc opinion will probably lean toward Com mander Bingen and Nelson Boy. The next item to be decided is one +>t*i r -iiu-avs finds favour with the public and as usual a big field will contest the
A snappy lot of saddle merchants are carded here and fancies are sure to find an extensive range. On the front is Dick Logan, to whom a correct kick-off would mean a decent portion of the stake, while the consistent Maiwhariti will keep all hands busy. Succession and Bing Boy are a pair, that it' in the mood, could upset the beet of calculations, while the successful sire, Rey de Oro. will be given a chance to gain distinction on the track. Billy Sea is a likely sort and Chet has a gooci saddle record this season. Bingen Lad won well at Dunedin and the consistent Sahib will hud a lot o friends. Rebel is not too reliable, although quite capable of doing the trick and Macaranda and Kotuku Jack are solid pacers. High Jinks can scampe with the weight on top and Boyai Serene went very fast to get second to Chef at Tin.aru. Darknite may pa> another price, but favourites will prouably be Dick Logan and Maiwhariti. In tho former’s absence the Chef-High Jinks bracket will appeal. Interest will then centre in the big buns and the various runners will be closely scrutinised as they parade for the MIDSUMMER HANDICAP. Of £1,000; 4. 50 class; 2 miles. Audacious . . . Lt. They may declare finally for Logan Park and the Bonny Logan-Logan Chief bracket, with a keenness for Terence Dillon in the absence of any of those referred to. The event which follows will grive those who aim at reaching the thousand pound standard an opportunity to qualify and a promising lot will go to the post lor the PAPANUI HANDICAP. Lingficld is on the improve, and should run prominently. Omaha went a slinging good second to Dundas Boy at Timaru. while Jolly Pet, if he left the mark, would be handy at the finish. Real Light looks a better proposition than Golden Bubbles ov?r two miles, and it Donald’s charge is dressed in his best, he should be knocking loudly at
tho gate. Wharepiuna is staying on better and so is Jean McElwyn, and the lattey’s Dunedin form suggests she will be in the money. Epigram has plenty of speed and so has Double Event, but they may be outstayed by Billy Sea. When the adjustment is completed fancies may be Jean McElwyn and Wharepiana. The square-gaited fraternity who have reached a higher degree than the improvers’ stage will do battle in the CASHMERE HANDICAP Of £500; 4.40 class; 2 miles. Bonnie Belmont Lt. Old Nighborn will be cheeky, while Proud Ata was returned a winner not long back. Lee Todd is consistent and his turn is surely at hand, while Sarsaparilla only requires to keep on his feet to make it hard for the opposition to head him off. Cannonball may want a race to tune him up, but on recent form Happy Rosa will take all sorts of beating. Engagement should be dangerous, although she does not appear to be seen at her best on the Addington track. Trampfast will keep the front lot going, and Money Spider, if anywhere handy at the turn, will put in a great rattle. The favourites may be Bonny Belmont and Leo Todd. A useful field of three-year-olds will attract attention as they go through their preliminaries for the JUVENILE HANDICAP, Of £300; for three-year-olds; 1J miles. Choysa . . . Lt Tactless . . . Lt Denver City. Lt John Noble . . 12 Ellesmere Lindbergh . . 12 Chimes . . Lt Sonoma Child . 60 Strolholm . . Lt Grand Light . . 84 Off the front line is the promising Auckland-owned filly Choysa, and if she acts up to her private reputation on the day, the others will want to go fast to have a chance of settling her. Choysa will be bracketed with that good colt, Grandlight, and the combination will be well supported. If Tactless has improved in his manners, and leaves with the rest, the Triumph colt will add a lot of interest to the race, and he might land the goods. Strolholm, if he lived up to his name, would be a fine proposition. John Noble is an improving sort and Lindbergh’s recent form suggests he wili play a leading part in the story. Sonoma Child lias not so far fulfilled bis earlier promise. The public will depend on Choysa-Grandlight bracket and Lindbergh. Slower class two-milers, with reasonable prospects of reaching higher society will take part in the LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. Of £300; 4.40 class; 2 miles. Dillnon . . . Lt. High Jinks . . 48 Vestas Lt. Avenger .... 60 The front line includes an improved trio in Roddy, Dillnon, and Mercury, and on recent form the former will probably have most friends. Golden Author is a likely sort, and Vestas, if keyed up, would be a possibility. Erin’s Lynn is on the up-grade, but the three on the next line are more than useful. Travis Axworthy is a brilliant sprinter, that should be able now' to get to the end of a solid run two miles. Hector’s Own was returned a winner at Forbury and did bis job thoroughly, while Ricardo out up a sound performance at Alexandra lark
at Christmas, and his second to Warplahe was a fine effort. Of those further back Avenger has the best credentials, but the elect may be Tr-avis Axworthy, but in his absence Ricardo and Roddy will be in demand. The programme will be concluded with a contest for speed merchants, and some smart customers will measure strides in the CRAVEN HANDICAP. Of £300; 2.46 class; 15 miles Crlcnelg .... Lt. Glenelg. if dressed in his best, would lead the field a merry dance, but he has not shown his previous dash since returning to the track. Quality speedy, but at times iffy, and Jolly Chimes may do best of the front-liners. Dundas Boy is set a hard task, and Audacious. unless improved since Christmas, will find his job severe. Pageant, however, is a real horse, and he will be one of the hardest to dispose of He will he bracketed with the brilliant Prince Pointer and it will be a favourite selection. Black Admiral is overdue, but this field should prove suitable. Golden Devon is a speedy chap, and Talent is a smart beginner that will be moving all the way. Tn a good pool the order may be Pagear.tPrince Pointer bracket and Jolly Chimes.
