Merxeis Launches Big Surprise
YOMA BEAT HYNANNA
| THE TARANAKI MEETING
(Special to THE SUN) NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday. Light showers fell to-day, but they had little effect on the course or attendance. and the Taranaki Jockey Club’s summer meeting showed an increase for the opening - day of £2.299 upon last year’s betting, the sum put through the machine being £21,851.
P. Adams, rider of Atareria in the Waitara Hurdles, was thrown heavily when Atereria hit a hurdle half a mile from home, and he is now in hospital suffering: from severe head injuries. Waitara Hurdles On his Hawera form Royal Acre, who had the services of S. Henderson, was backed to favouritism. He was always one of the leaders, and piloted the field through the straight the first time, accompanied by Bonhomme. with Zircon and Atereria next. Atereria ran up to the leaders with seven furlongs to go, but hit a fence hard. Royal Acre led Bonhomme, Polyphemus and Zircon into the straight,, finally coming away to win as he liked by a length from Bonhomme, with Zircon four lengths away third. Polyphemus was fourth, and Puwhero and Vexatious next. Royal Acre won with ridiculous ease. Zircon needed the race. Ngamotu Juvenile Royal Finance was backed to a short price in the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap, in which Callapat, who drew the rails, got away well and led to the straight with Tenacre. Airway and Royal Finance handy, but all running outside the leader rounding the home turn. Airway finished best and won by a neck from Tenacre. with Banket three lengths away third. Becky Sharp and Roj r al Finance (who was very unlucky) followed the placed horses home. Flying Handicap Cimabue, Lady Quex and Llanore were evenly backed in the Flying Handicap. Lady Quex began brilliantly and soon ran to the front, to lead into the straight from Whenuanui and Llanore, and come on and win easily by two lengths from Wlienuanui, while Llanore finished another two lengths away. Cimabue did not run at all well and finished a poor fourth. The winner emphasised the fact that she is brilliant. She gave none of the others a chance. Moturoa Electric Taneriri and Golden Flower were the well-backed runners in the Moturoa Electric Handicap. Joke Form got away well and led to the straight with Merxeis handy and Tangerim working toward the front. Merxeis ran on well from the home turn and won by half a length easily from Taneriri. Joke Form was less than a length away third, and Golden Flower fourth. Golden Flower, Austerity and Lady Lucerne were among the most prominent of the unplaced division. Taneriri might soon do better. The winner, who paid a great dividend, is trained by E. George and is the first of Thespian’s stock to win. Taranaki Cup The defection of Talisker and Mendip reduced the Cup to a seven-horse race. Ilynanna was a much better favourite than Yoma. The early pace was slow, and Bright Glow and Anolo led through the straight from Vertigern and Yoma, with Hynanna and Miss Mercia last. Five furlongs from home Anolo had run to the front and led from Bright Glow and Yoma, with Vertigern and then I-Iynanna. Yoma and Hynanna. both improved thenpositions on the bend approaching the straight, Yoma always going the better of the pair. I-Iynanna could not get to him in the run up the straight, and'Yoma won by two lengths from Hynanna, who had to do his best to beat Bright Glow by half a length. Vertigern was a fair fourth and Miss Mercia last.
Hynanna looked a trifle light and ran a little below his Hawera form. Bright Glow again failed to stay truly. Okato Hack Handicap
The public went solidly for Kawa*. kina and Calamine in the Okato Hack Handicap. The race was won from the front by Whisogne. Whiaogne was followed on the way round to the straight by Airtight and Gasnapper. Nearing home Kawakina rushed up from the back, but others moved, too, and he was kept wide out. The tactics of the rear division assisted the leaders, and Whisogne stayed on to win by a head from Gasnapper, with Spearmiss another head away third and Kawakina fourth. Under different conditions Kawakina would have been harder to beat. Mimi High-weight Handicap Gold Acre and The Swell were at short prices for the Mimi High-weight Handicap. .Borsaiene and Hipo led all the way to the straight, where The Swell moved up. In a good finish The Swell got home by a head from Hipo, who only beat Borsaiene by half a head. Gold Cure was fourth and Manly fifth. The Swell did well to win, as he was giving the leaders considerable start half-way through the race. The turning course did not suit Gold Cure. Timaru Hack Handicap Havering was better backed than Gold Dawn for the Timaru Hack Handicap. Endorse went out fast and led by -several lengths along the back. She came back to her field nearing the straight entrance, and there Gold Dawn was brought along. She soon had charge, eventually winning by two lengths from Greenacre, with Havering third a length away, just ahead of Endorse.
