“AVERT DISTRESS”
APPEAL TO TIMBERWORKERS
LEVY ON WORKING UNIONISTS
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.5 a.m. CANBERRA, To-day. The Federal Attorney-General, Mr. J. G. Latham, has addressed an appeal to the timber workers, on behalf of the people of the Commonwealth, to abide by the award and avert unemployment and distress. A message from Sydney says that as a result of the timber strike, the Labour Council Executive has decided to impose a levy of a shilling a week on adult males, and sixpence a week on females, on all members who are working. A significant feature is the special exemption from the levy given to the Miners’ Federation, in view of the condition existing in the coal industry. According to a message from Adelaide, indications then; point to all mills at Fort Adelaide being in full swing by Monday. The owners have engaged non-union labour to augment their skeleton staffs, which have been carrying on in the meantime.
