THE first English cricket team to visit Australia was Stephenson’s side of 1861, but twenty years before that there was an All-England Eleven, accepted as such and playing under the title. Organised as a business enterprise by William Clarke (second from left in picture), it comprised all the finest professional talent of the day, and was intermittently reinforced by several of the leading amateurs. The above picture is from an old print on cloth.
