The Taumarunui district Senior Cadet Company, which has just completed a week’s training, was finally inspected by the following officers: Brigadier H. R. Potter, C.M.G.. Northern Command; Major Glendinning, D. 5.0., A.A.Q.M.G., and Captain G. DKtmer, M.C., staff officer in command of Nos. 2 and 4 districts. The work and general bearing of the cadets tvas pronounced as very satisfactory. A sports meeting was held on the final afternoon, the principal events being:— Cadets’ Championship. 100yds: F. Joyce, 1; T. Gratten, 2; J. Blackman, 3. 75Yds. Race, boys 15 and tinder: J. Blackman. 1; W. Toomen, 2; O’Reilly and tie for third. Wheelbarrow Race: Woodmass Brothers. 1; Lees and Kirton, 2; Townsend and Raynor, 3. Relay Race: W. Woodmass, 1; J. Lees, 2; J. Maud, 3. XOOYds. Handicap: J. Wells, 1 . F. Woodmass, 2; F. Joyce. 3. 440Yds. Handicap: J. Wells, 1; L. Kirton. 2; J. Carinody. 3. Band Boys’ Race: F. Woodmass. 1; R. Goodall, 2; L. Leydon. 3. The tug- o - war was won by the cadet team. Brigadier Pot'.er also inspected the Boys’ Band, which is semi-military, and donated prizes of £1 and 10s 6d for the players who show the greatest improvement during the xiext three months. • * * Mr. R. H. Ross, superintendent c*f the Taumarunui Fire Brigade, has been appointed in official for the forthcoming demonstration to be held at Hokitika. * * * For a trophy presented by Mrs. D. Wilson, the Manunui Pigeon Club flew Its first young bird race south tho result being: D. Andrew’s Eaglet. 903.7yds a minute, 1; R. Patterson’s Black Watch, 887.1yd5., 2; D. Wilson’s Grand Box, 880.2yd5., 3; J. Whittaker’s Southern Cross, 812.7yd5., 4. Tho co-ordinating of the \arious branches of tho New Zealand Farmers* Union in the Southern King Country has been consummated in the formation of a sub-pi'ovince to cover the w’hole district, with headquarters at Taumarunui. The election of a president has been temporarily deferred. * * s Mr. IL E. Pain has been appointed first assistant at the Taumarunui Primary School. c * * Tho annual meeting of tho Opatu Sports Club (Ohura district) was held in fine weather, and proved most successful. The principal results of a lengthy programme were at follow:—14-inch Standing Chop (Opatu Handicap): Dempsey, 1; L. Ernie, 2; E. Woolston, 3. 12-inch Standing Chop: L. Ernie, 1; J. Larkin, 2; W. Gibbons, 3. 14-inch Underhand Chop: Larkin, 1; Dempsey, 2; Ernie 3. 100Yds. Handicap: J. Gill, 1; Ritani, 2. Hop, Step and Jump: Carrol, 1 (36ft. 7ln >; T. Ritani, 2 (36ft.); and Phillips. 3 (35ft. Sin). Sack Race: Tomkins, 1; H. Carroll, 2. Married Ladies’ Racf*: Mrs. Comache, 1; Mrs. Chase, 2. Single Ladies’ Rare: Miss Reece 1; Miss Loft, 2.
At the last meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council tho Mayor (Mi - . G. E. Manson) and Cr. J. E. Ward were appointed as the coum-il representatives on the Taumarunui Fire Board for tho ensuing >•»-:< r. An offer of £l5O from the Dargavillo Boi-ough Council for the old gas plant was accepted. Electricity agreements with Winston e’s Roofing Tilo Works. Ltd., and the Kaitieke Co-opera-tive Dairy Company, Ltd., were rein-wed for a further term of five years. As a result of the termination of Mr. W. H. Honour’s services as borough inspector, applications arc being called for the positions o: borough sanitaiy and building inspector and turncock at a salary of £3 10s a week, and traffic inspector, poundkeeper and dog tax collector at £ 1 10s a week.
