MR. WILLIAM HANDLEY EX-MAYOR OF DEVONPORT The death occurred at Devonport this morning of Mr. William Handley, an ex-mayor of the Borough of Devonport. Mr. Handley came to New Zealand in 1880 in the famous Rotomahana on her maiden voyage to the country, and he settled at Devonport in 1892. Ho was for five years a member of the Borough Council and for six years during the Hon. E. W. Alison’s term as Mayor, was deputy-mayor. From 1896 to 1904, a period of eight years, he was Mayor of the borough. Mr. Handley was well known in racing circles, being a steward and vice-president of the Takapuna Jockey Club. At various times during his life he owned racehorses, and till the end of his life was interested in the sport. Mr Handley, who was 74 years old, leaves a wife, three sons and three daughters. All his children are married.
