MAN CHARGED WITH FALSE PRETENCES

STORY OF AN ARREST Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. A case is being heard in the Supreme Court in "which Robert Edward Cobb is charged with attempting to obtain £2O from the newspaper “Truth” by means of a false pretence. The story for the prosecution is that, posing as an American secret service officer. Cobb offered to sell a story of the arrest of one Quale, whom he said he had lodged in the prison cells at Wellington, and whom he said was an accomplice of the youth Hickman who was sentenced to death for a Los Angeles murder. He also averred that he was watching a woman implicated in the Marrickville murder in New South Wales. The accused says the whole thing was only an escapade, and he did not intend to take the £2O.
