LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY

DELEGATES CONFER Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. The annual conference of life-saving delegates was commenced this morning. Mr. G. S. Hill, president of the Life-saving Society, was elected to the chair, and Mr. F. Chapman was appointed secretary. The following delegates were also present: Messrs. L. Brighton and A. B. Coleman (Auckland), H. R. Gilberd (Wanganui), P. U. Bamford (Canterbury), A. R. Knights (Otago), J. A. DufTy (Wellington), W. C. Collier (Palmerston North), and H. M. Eaglesome (Canterbury). On the motion of Mr. W. C. Collier (Palmerston North) it was decided t«» set up a sub-committee :'or the purpose of redrafting the riles of lifesaving competitions, with a view to securing greater uniformity. A remit was received from tin* Wanganui Centre, that a clause b* added to the rules govern, ng teachers’ certificates, that the hold ?r of a certificate must be over the age of four teen, it being considered that a child under that age could not properly control a class. An amendment to the effect that no child under the age of 14 be allowed to sit for teaching certificates was passed unanimously. A Canterbury' remit that the members of teams competing in the Nelson Shield contests must be ho.ders of surf medallions was passed after little dif - cussioA.

Probably the most popular remit was j that forwarded by the Canterbury j Centre, that the Government grant • should be increased. As similar remits I were received from Wellington. Auckland and Dunedin it was decided to incorporate them in one motion: “That it be a recommendation to the New Zealand Council to make strenuous ei deavours during the coming session to have .the Government grant \ increased subsidy, as the work of tl ** society during the past years was such as to warrant an increase from to £500.” This motion was passed unanimously after a brief discussion.
