MAYOR’S HONORARIUM
NEWMARKET PROPOSES REDUCTION
LETTERS TO LOANS BOARD
The corieKpondence which took place between the Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. S. Donaldson, and the Loans Board when Newmarket’s recent request for a loan was under consideration, was expected to be the subject of some lively discussion at the council meeting last evening, when the letters were to have been brought forward. However, only three out of the four letters were available last evening, and Cr. G. E. Smerdon, who had moved the oi iginal motion asking Cor the correspondence, agreed to let the matter stand over until the next meeting in order that the fourth letter, as well as the replies received by the Mayor might be produced. Cr. H. J. Cooper gave notice that he intended to move at the next meeting "that the honorarium of the incoming Mayor be fixed at the sum of £ 100 per annum.” The present Mayor receives £2OO a year. The Legal and Finance Committee reported that there was a credit balance in the district fund to the end of January of £2,388 19s 2d. The total of rates struck and recurrent at the same date was reported to be £19,480 10s lid, an increase over the month Sd * ebruar y of last year of £sll 4 S A letter was received from the Auckland Electric-Power Board, asking that the council would make arrangements for the taking of a poll on th= board’s proposed loan of £650.000 on February 20. The clerk was ordered to deal with the letter.
