THREE MILE HARBOUR SWIM
WELLINGTON MAN WINS Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. The three mile swim in the harbour for the Annette Kellerman Cup took place this morning. Result: Claridge (Wellington), s»m 1 Harty (Nelson), 4Jm 2 Miss Copplestone (last year's winner), Ashburton, 16m 3 Times: 94m 0 4-ss; 97m 29 3-ss; 110 m 45 2-ss. Twenty started, only six finished. The race created great interest, thousands of spectators lining Clyde Quay Wharf, the finishing point, and along the foreshore at Oriental Bay. The ferry steamer Muritai also carried several hundreds, and a number of small craft followed the competitors. Those who started were Webster (Auckland), scr; Enwright (Auckland), lm 30s; Bolam (Canterbury), 0m; Hyland (Wanganui), 4Jm; Harty (Nelson), 41m; Claridge (Wellington), s£m; Murrell (Wellington), 74m; Blakeley (Wellington), 9m; Hepburn (Wellington), 12m; Dalton (Canterbury), 13m; Boyd (Otago), 13m; Fletcher (Wellington), 144 m; Shannon (Wellington), 14£m; Miss Copplestone (Ashburton), 16m; Cameron (Canterbury), 17m; Foot (Wellington), 17m: Raven (Wellington), 18£m; Francis (Wellington), 18*>m; Tipler (Canterbury), 19m; Buchanan (Wellington), 28m. Others who finished besides the placed swimmers were:—Enwright (97m 17s), Webster (96m 225); Murrell (103 m2 6 l-ss). At the time of the start there was a fresh north-westerly, and the water was choppy. As the race progressed the conditions improved, and the swimmers finished in smooth water under a clear, sunny sky. At 10.45 the litmit, man, Buchanan, entered the water. Each competitor dived off the official launch to cheers. Tipler was the first to pull out only going a little way. Most of the early starters were carried over toward Oriental Bay, but Enwright and Claridge set a good course to the right of Clyde Quay Wharf. Buchanan was the firs.t to reach the quay, followed by Francis, Miss Copplestone and Shannon together. Foot turned last. Webster was just ahead. Buchanan shortly after the turn retired. Five others had already done so. Shannon was in tbe lead going across the Bay, but a little later lie got into a launch, leaving Miss Copplestone in the lead. She turned first for home, only a few seconds ahead of Claridge, who assumed the lead and drew away from the Ashburton girl, who was also passed by Harty. The order remained so till the finish. All six who completed the course showed no sign of distress.
