Wireto the “?tew York Tiiues. CV Y OF WHALES, Wednesday. The City ol New York returned to the Bay to-day after a short trip to’ -oid the ice. The work of unload- * tbe material left on board of her 'y the Eleanor Bolins; has been comietcd. All the supplies left on the turri-’r edge after the cliff broke and £e ll upon us have been safely hauled to the base. In a few days we will have ashore a large house, gasoline and food. Twenty-seven dogs hauled the Ford rnlane far back from the Barrier .‘hge. All tho dogs could have been put into the cabin of the plane. It u -as hard pulling, but the men aided •he dogs, ana in a few hours the Barrier trail was so smooth that even the top-heavy radio transmitter. which weighs I.ooolb. was taken in easily by one driver and seven dogs. The old trail over the Bay ice is being used again, and as the ship is moored now to tho old ice, which Is several feet thick, there is no chance men going in near the ship Some of the cracks near the inlet on which our base is situated opened up reccntlv. This is because of the movement of the ice or of some unexplained pressure, but they can be bridged. . The weather to-day is perfect after :l storm. The sun shines as warmly as on a spiring day. but when it is low in the sky it quickly becomes cold, and ieo forms near the ship.
