FAST NEW FREIGHTERS

TO AUSTRALIA i IMPROVED SERVICE PLANNED (United Servicej Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Tuesda; The probability of the allocation of three new fast freighters to the Australian trade is being discussed in shipping circles in New York. It is understood that the Roosevelt interests are planning an improved service with a fleet of big Diesel driven ships. The announcement is admittedly premature, nevertheless the Roosevelt Line is receiving thre vessels, namely, the Courageous. Triumph and Defiance, which have recently been converted to Diesel-electrit drive.

Britain’s share was 1,446. 0l»t* tons, an increase of 414,000 and 220.00“ respectively, compared with 1927. The largest ships were built in Ger many, namely, the two 46.000-ton turbine vessels, Bremen and Europa. The gross tonnage of sea going me-chanically-propelled vessels afloat i* 61.594,000 tons. compared with 42,514,000 before the war. The adveir of the oil age is reflected in the fact that the tankers afloat total 6,544.000 tons, compared with 1.479.000 befor. the war. Motor-ships total 5,432.00»». compared with 234,000.
