JX the House of Commons, during questions regarding coalmining, mention was made of an alleged shortage of coal in consequence of which steamers were held up on the Tyne. Lieut.-Colonel Howard-Bury, Conservative member for Chelmsford, aroused a Labour uproar by asking, “Is it not a fact that several mines in South Wales are ready to open, but cannot get the necessary 2,000 miners?’* Labour members asked if the question was an insinuation, Mr. David Kirkwood (Dumbarton), wa/ving his fist in the direction of the Conservative benches and shouting, “Liar!** The Conservatives retaliated with “Sit down!** and “Shut up I” The Speaker pointed out that Lieut.-

Colonel Howard-Bury did not intend to insult anybody. “If you do not make him witndraw, we will defy you. He insulted the House and the heir to the Throne,” retaliated Mr. Kirkwood. After the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Winston Churchill, had been the target of a hostile demontration, the incident ended in his suggestion that the question should be addressed to the Minister of Mines.

The Lord Mayor of Newcastle has sent a letter to the Prince of Wales expressing, on behalf of the people of Northumberland and Durham, their gratitude for liis tour of tlie distressed mining areas. His Royal Highness, said the Mayor, had witnessed some tragic scenes, but had left behind him a ray of hope and happy memories which would cheer the people for years. His letter concluded: “We salute you, sir, as our Prince indeed, and a greater Briton.”
