Poison Gas
ERECTION OF CHAMBER AT CALLIOPE DOCK
TRAINING PURPOSES Preparation for the combating of a horror of modern warfare —poison gas —is being made by the New Zealand Naval Division. Application was made to the Harbour Board yesterday for permission to erect a “gas chamber” in Calliope dockyard, to the eastward of the existing torpedo store. Reporting on the scheme, the board’s engineer said that it was intended to build the chamber 10ft. by 10ft by Sft., close to the jetty, where it would not inconvenience residents living close to the dockyard. “I wonder what it is for?” asked a member. Mr. H. R. Mackenzie: It’s all right. It is not for any of the members of this board. The chairman explained that the room would be used by the naval authorities for training purposes. The board should be indemnified against any danger of the use of the poison gas. The trainees would enter the room in gas helmets. The request was referred to the board in committee.
