Hynanna’s Chance
IN THE TARANAKI CUP
Llanore and the Sprint
THE summer meeting of tlie Taranaki Jockey Club is to be held to-morrow and on Saturday, with the tup tCl | tC to-morrow ancl the classic, the Taranaki Stakes, on Saturday. The fixture is an important one, and leads up to A anganu next week.
The Taranaki meeting- to-morrow and Saturday is held on the New Plymouth course, which, by the way, is far from a good one, with its corners and short straight, and good beginners should make their presence felt throughout the two days. Fine acceptances have been received for the first day’s card, and there should be some interesting racing. On Saturday there is the six-furlong classic, the Taranaki Stakes, in which Paganelli will endeavour to uphold the prestige of the North against allcomers from the South. Waitara Hurdles The opening event is that over obstacles, the start being timed for midday. The two Haw era winners. Vexatious and Atareria, are both engaged, and they have been raised 91b and Sib respectively. Of course, they should again go well, and so too should Zircon, Airtight, Puwbero, Polyphemus, Bonhomme, Vivo and Royal Acre, with a great race between this bunch, and the Aucklander, Abbot’s Delight, the outsider. Perhaps the favourites on this occasion will be Royal Acre (S. Henderson replacing the jockey who displayed such bad judgment the first day at Hawera) and Bonhomme. Ngamotu Juvenile Early speed will be a vital factor in the two and three-year-old contest, for there is but a short run out to the big bend that carries the field to
within 200 yards of the judge. The three at the top all ran well at Egmont, and especially Llanore. Endorse, Tenacre, Royal Finance, Flying Binge, Airway and Becky Sharp II all have speed, so that it will be a good race, with a good deal dependent on the post positions. Llanore, Royal Finance and Banket promise to be heavily backed, especially if the* llrst-named is started here in preference to the sprint. Flying Handicap
Ten figure in the sprint, and a couple of them also are included in the preceding race, these being Banket and Llanore. Cimabue represents the best class, and Benzora is about due. Likely improvers are High Disdain, Te Atiawa, Lady Quex, Whenuanui and Macroom, for whose win at Matamata last Saturday no rehandicap has as yet been announced. It is quite likely that the horses near the top will have to give -way to some of the smart tliree-year-olds, and two of them that can safely be placed in this category are Llanore and Lady Quex. Moturoa Electric No less than 22 remain in the maiden event, so that more than half of them will have their chances ruined soon after the start. Of the majority little is known but Billet showed promise in the early sprint till she was injured. Then there are Ngawhine, Kali. Potency, Golden Flower, Parfait Amour and Fortalice. Perhaps the favourites will be Parfait Amour and Rillet. Taranaki Cup The field of nine is by no means so bad as it appears, but rather is it a blessing, for on the small course nine runners in an event of this importance is plenty. Vertigern, bracketed once more with Talisker, must bo given
a chance. although he failed at Hawera, but he was not far away at the finish, being a good foul“E, nanna should have won the Egmont. Cup from all accounts, and 1
a great position to-morrow to repeat his success of 12 months ago. Xoma is not out of it with a 71b penalty, and he won this race two years ago. Mendip is an improver, and Anolo too. but Home Made may be beaten by the course. Miss Mercia is an ou sider, but may see it out. Punters will no doubt follow Egmont Cup form, in which Bright Glow ran well, only to be beaten once again by the distance, and declare in favour of Hynanna and Yoma. Okato Hack Two Hawera winners in Onward and Calamine are engaged here, their penalties being 51b and 101 b respectively, and perhaps the difference in this alone is a pointer. Airtight, Kawhakina, Acred, Miss Mercia and Gasnapper are some to be respected in addition to the first pair, but one comes back to Calamine and Kawhakina. Mimi High-Weight Here again there are a couple of penalised horses engaged. The Swell 31b and Borsalene 41b. The former is a good horse when right. .’'"‘l his recent form indicates that 3; ■ sc« to that. King Midas, Partaga, Mu:: . , Paul Lucerne, Monoghan, Gold Cure. Melissa, Hipo (the last two will be bracketed), Seastar and Borsalene are all
possessed of chances in what is really a very open race. No doubt there will be a lot of support for Monoghan and Gold Cure.
Timaru Hack Handicap
The curtain on the first day will be rung down on the hack six. which has a field of a dozen. Some that are likely are Gold Dawn, Monsogne, Cool Mint (penalised 91b for a Hawera success), Havering, Potoleer. Green Acre, Bione and Ngawhine. They are not a good lot by any means, which suggests that the recent form of Cool Mint and Gold Dawn will have to be respected.
