COLONEL FREYBERG’S NEW COMMAND (Australian and N.Z. Press AssociationJ Reed. 11.15 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Lieut.-Colonel B. C. Freyberg, V.C., C.M.G., D. 5.0., has been appointed to command the First Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.
Born and educated in Wellington, Lieutenant-Colonel Freyberg was well known in Australia and New Zealand as a fine swimmer, rower, boxer and footballer. Leaving New Zealand, he went to America, eventually going to Mexico, where he took part in a civil In the Great War, after service at Antwerp, he was in the Gallipoli operations. He was in charge of a force which was to make

In 1916, he won the Victoria Cross in France when lie rallied his men under heavy fire, although he had been Mounded twice, and held a position. A \ illagre was captured through his determination and 500 prisoners taken.
