Northern Roads

Alternative Routes Reconi mended by A.A.A. TO AVOID CONSTRUCTION WORK The Auckland Automobile Association advises that owing to the urgent representations of the engineers in charge of the reconstruction of the No. 1 Main Highway between Auckland and Maungaturoto, all traffic is to be diverted away from the road between Puhoi and Warkworth, Warkworth and Wellsford, and Wellsford and Kaiwaka. Several hundred men have for months been engaged on reconstruction work, and now that portions have been completed, gangs of motorlorries w r ill start operations on Wednesday to lay the first coat of metal. An endeavour is being made to provide an all-weather connection for the coming winter, and if the workmen are delayed in any way, there is every likelihood of the wet weather coming down and preventing the work from being completed. The Auckland Automobile Association therefore urges motorists to accept this recommendation on the undermentioned route which, although a little longer, will ultimately be for the benefit of motorists.

Travelling north from Auckland, cars should proceed to Henderson and then follow the route via Swanson and Waitakere to Kumeu and Helensville. The West Coast route is then followed through Port Albert to Wellsford. At Wellsford, the railway line is crossed by the station and a run of three miles effects a junction with the main East Coast Road, which is followed through to Mangawai. Half a mile north of Mangawai, cars for Dargaville will follow straight ahead, taking the road through to Kaiwaka, where the main AucklandDargaville route is joined. Cars for Whangarei will turn to the right following the route through Waipu.

The same route must be followed coming south, and cars for Whangarei will follow the usual East Coast Road to a corner half a mile south of the Waitietie School, whence it is only three miles to Wellsford, where the West. Coast route is joined Cars from Dargaville have a more round about journey, and at Kaiwaka ■will turn off and proceed through to Mangawai, then following the route as defined for the Whangarei traffic.
