STOREMAN AND CARTER CHARGED

THEFTS FROM FIRM Press Association PALMERSTON N., Monday. Pleading- guilty, and electing to be dealt with summarily, to various charges of theft from their former employers, Messrs. Goldingham, Beckett, Ltd., John Berry Proud and Edward Charles William Cooper appeared at the Police Court this morning. They were charged that between October 4 and December 23 they stole various goods valued at £23 18s lid. Senior-Detective Quirke stated that Proud had been a storeman in the employ of the firm for nine years, and Cooper, a carter, for five years. Proud practically had charge of the store. When the police searched their respective premises they found goods valued at £l3 15s 4d in Proud’s possession, and goods valued at £lO 4s 7d in Cowper’s possession. In a statement Proud said the goods were taken at various times over a period of four months, while Cooper admitted that his thefts extended over a period of 12 months. Cooper is a married man and had experienced considerable family trouble through sickness.

After hearing evidence regarding Proud’s character and counsel’s statement regarding Cooper’s heavy medical expenses, the magistrate reserved decision until Wednesday.
