NO INTERFERENCE

GOVERNMENT WILL KEEP OUT OF BUSINESS

IMPORTS BY POST TO CEASE Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. A clear indication that the Government intends to check drastically any encroachment by the State on the field of legitimate private enterprise was given by the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in the course of a speech delivered at the reception to the British Trade Commissioner, Mr. L. B. Beale, last evening. “We are also going to stop the importations of goods through the post office by people who ought not to do it,” said Sir Joseph. “They send to the Homeland £4 or £5, invest it there, and get the goods delivered. These people are stopping the local trader. They are hurting the worker, they are hurting the public, and they cannot see how they are doing injury to the country as a whole. “It Is a fair thing that people who provide the taxes should not he brought into competition with the Government or municipal institutions which do not pay any rates themselves. We are killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.”
