SCHOOL AT MT. ROSKILL
NEW BUILDING OPENED ABOUT 80 PUPILS TO ATTEND A new wooden school to serve the needs uf the Mount Roskill district was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, at the corner of May Road and Richardson Road. Many residents of the district and pupils of the school were present. “The district will soon become a populous area when the new' Transport Board gets to work,” said Mr. Burns, and it was worth noting that the school was only one out of three for which sites had been selected. Settlement in healthy districts should be encouraged, he added, because it was no use educating children if they were going to lose their health. Mrs. Benfell, a member of the School Committee, and Mr. F. A. Garry, headmaster of the Mount Roskill School, also spoke. Mr. Burns declared the new' building open and, after the visitors had inspected it, afternoon tea was served. There are two classrooms in the building separated by folding doors. On the w r est side is a, large corridor, a cloakroom and another small room, equipped with a sink and an electric water-heater. There are two shelter sheds, one of which is connected to the main building by a roofed-in concrete pathway. The new school will hold all classes up to Standard VI. and it is expected that there will be about SO pupils present to-day under the headmaster, Mr. F. Wilks.
