DEARSLY WINS HANDICAP Dearsly won a 51 2-3yds race held by the Fonsonby Swimming Club at Shelly Beach Baths on Saturday afternoon. There were two heats. Results. —First heat: Moore. 1: F. Worden. 2; Neale. 3. Time, 30s. Second heat: Cashmore. 1: Pike. 2 Dearsly. 3. Time. 31 l-ss. Final: Dearsly, 1: Cashmere. 2: Worden, 3. Time. 31 3-as. NEW SWIMMING RECORD GIRL’S BRILLIANT FEAT (Australian and .Y.Z. Press Association SYDNEY. Sunday. At the Australian women’s swim ming carnival yesterday Miss Jean Cocks, a mere girl, won the 440yds championship in 5m 55 3-ss, which is an Australian record. The previous best time was Miss Fanny Durack’s. Miss Cocks has proved herself to be the greatest girl swimmer Australia has produced. She also won the 100 metres championship in lm 13 3-ss. Miss Cocks, who is only about 14 years old, came into prominence in November. 1927, when she swam 150yds in lm C» 3-ss, and 100yds in lm 10 2-ss. She w is then at Bondi School. Shortly after she beat Miss M. Wehselau’s record of 2m 49 2-ss. for 220vds, which she swam in 2m 48 3-ss. EVENTS AT HIKURANGi WHANGAREI, Saturday. A successful carnival was held by the Hikurangi Swimming Club. Results:— Women’s Handicap, 50yds - MisDorothy Thomas, 1; Miss Olive Harris. 2: Miss Jessie Cairns, 3. Won by a touch, after a fine race. Men’s Handicap. 50yds—J. Rarity, J: F. O’Callaghan, 2: M. McKenzie, 3. Won by a touch. Breaststroke—W. Platt, 1; J. Barlow, 2. A close finish. Ladies’ Handicap. 100yds—Miss Olive Harris, 1: Miss Jessie Cairns, 2. Won easily. Neat Header —R. Penney, 1; S. Jackson. 2. Relay Race—Mclnnes’s team. 1.
