Busy Trainers

Good Work Witnessed at Epsom on Saturday NOVICES SHAPE WELL From an early hour on Saturday morning Alexandra Park presented an animated scene, trainers being right on the job with their various charges. Before breakfast the track was thickly c'oated with dust, but those who worked later complained of the sticky footing caused by the application of water. The track was not fast, consequently no records were registered, although several candidates gave sound displays. Interesting Duel Nelson McCormack (J Shaw) and Halgana (P. Ropers) were associated in a spin over 10 furlongs, in which both candidates showed pleasing form There was not much between them, although Nelson McCormack appeared to have slightly the better of the argument at the finish. Peter Lloyd Pleases An interesting piece of work wa> | accomplished by Nelson Dillon (C. G. ; bee). Red Star (T. Maxted), Peter ! T,loyd (A. Kinnimont), and Raima (W Head). The quartet hopped away at the 1-’-furlong disc. Red Star and Peter Lloyd the other pair for a mile, where Nelson Dillon and Raima closed up. The pace was right on over the last half, the trotter getting to the front two furlongs from home In the run up the straight. Nelson Dillon —who was wide out—came with a rattle to finish on terms with Raima. Peter Lloyd two lengths away, with Red Star beaten off. It was a splendid did effort on the part of the Peterwah gelding. Torpedo Huon Striking Form Torpedo lluon (.1. Shaw), Rolfe Audubon (A. Julian), and Warplane (R. Low) were companions in a bout over a mile and a half. The latter earl\ put a break of several lengths on his associates, but with a mile traversed Torpedo Huon and Rolfe Audubon had almost bridged the gap. In the drive along the final stretch. Torpedo Huon, who paced nicely, got up beside his stabjemate. to finish together, with Rolfe Audubon, who stopped over the last pinch, about 30 yards away. Great Way’s Faultless Effort Great Way (H. Kinnimont) and Napland (A. Richardson), after being warmed up, set off on a 12-furlong journey, the pace being fairly even over each half-mile. Napland acted as pacemaker for part of the distance, when the three-year-old moved up to his elder companion, and, footing it faultlessly, the pair came home together. It was a fine work-out, particularly on the part of Great Way. The Royal Oak team is in forward condition, and is a credit to Stan Selkirk, who is attending to its requirements. Margaret Wallace Steps* Freely Golden Huia (G. Lovegrove). Tiger Salvo (C. G. Lee), and Margaret Wallace (E. Sandall). traversed three circuits at a good clip. The pacer on the

Tiger Salve acting as schoolmaster to Golden Huia, who trotted in improved style for the major portion of the journey. Up the straight the pace was on. but nearing the post the maiden trotter left her feet. Except for this fault, the Gold Bell mare went well, and k>oks as if she will get in the money during the country meetings. Margaret Wallace paced boldly, and is showing a big improvement. Haerenga Pai Goes Better Haerenga Pai (G. Phipps) and Speed King (G. Stubbs) were apportioned a mile and a-half task. While the former began right, she immediately tangled, allowing her associate to get several lengths’ lead. With a good turn of speed. Haerenga Pai gathered the leader at the half-mile post, and the pair, not fully extended, were on terms w hen the post was reached. The Happy Voyage mare paced more gener- . opsly than in some of her recent W. Clifton geared The Abbey up, and jogged round the track several times in the hope of finding a suitable companion, but as it was the slack period, the Royal Oak trainer was forced to play a solo part The allotment was the favourite 12-f urfongs, and the Gold Bell qelding stepped over the journey in free style. Bill asked his charge a question over the last four furlongs, and the answer was readily forthcoming, the chestnut winding up a good work-out in splendid style. Improving Novices Lady Yvonne (G. Stubbs) and Patricia Bell (G. Webb) were geared up and slipped over 10 furlongs. Both novices iKiced freely, and without making anyThink wonderful in the way of time, rendered their piece in a satisfactory manner. Patricia Bell has not been »I> long after a short respite, and her effort vvas pleasing, while Lady Yvonne ■s on the up grade. Dillon Huon Turns-lt On Dillon Huon (J. McKendrick) con- ■ tded Admiral Lock (G. Robertson) and Dad’s Hope (W. Clifton) about 00 yards in a mile and a-half bout, and, pacing in his best style, was able to break '■ven with the pair when the post was leached. Admiral Lock and Dad’s Hope paced solidly, and there was nothing between them at the end. Over l he last half-mile Dillon Huon showed a great burst of speed, and the son °f Harold Dillon is in rare trim. Another Promising Novice Horizon (G. Robertson) and Peggy 'fe Or (J. Lynch) had an interesting bout over 10 furlongs, the former conceding the novice several lengths’ start. Horizon paced soundly, and made no mistakes, but the Rey de Oro filly kept him busy for a mile, where the older Pacer had her measure. The performance of the maiden was. however, a Pleasing one. and when she gets rac’Pg experience she should be a useful s ort. No Mistakes Made Etta Cole (F. Gilchrist) had as a companion Direct Action, who had the services of a light boy in the saddle.

and hitting out in bold style, the chest- i nut had too much speed for Direct Action, but he answered to the call of his rider, and was not far away at the finish. Both trotters are coming to hand readily. A feature of the workout was the excellent horsemanship displayed by the little chap on Direct Action. Trotters Work Well A large number worked in solo fashion, and among the square-gaiters Garth Robertson’s pair. The Tartar and Billy Carbine, showed fine form. The Tartar traversed two miles without putting a foot wrong, showing even peed over each half. Billy Carbine also went solidly over several circuits Great Change, who has been taken up again after a respite, gave a faultless exhibition for a mile and a-half with W. Lardner in the sulky. Among the pacers who worked alone, Van Rich (G. Robertson), ! Uncle Bert (W. Clifton), Medusa (A. Julian), Rockaway (W. Nightingale). Goldman (F. Gilchrist), and All Bell (W. Cockbill) pleased by their efforts, and all showed that they are ready for the toppingoff process. Goldman, unhoppled, covered two miles at an even rate of speed, and the Gold Bell gelding fairly revelled in his work. Owner Hedley has him in splendid condition.
