Sprint Winner Weighs In Too Light
EG MONT MEETING SENSATION (Special to THE SUN) . HAWERA, Saturday. ; The minimum weight in handicap race is 7.0. Llanore won the sprint to-day, but carried only 6.9 i, and was disqualified for the race, the favourite, who finished second, being j placed first. Llanore's trainer omitted some lead, and consequently the jockey could not draw the weight, 7.0. It was hard luck for Mr. A. Alexander, but, like the good sportsman he j is, he took it philosophically. The Egmont summer meeting was concluded to-day before another large attendance. In spite of blustery weather and light showers, as on the first day, the track was fast and in excellent order. The totalisator handled £23,537 for the day, an increase of £416 on the amount for the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £44,894 10s, an increase of £lßl 10s. Okaiawa Hurdles The Okaiawa Hurdles found Vexatious, Glengariff, Atareria and Polyphemus fairly evenly backed. Lucrative got away rather badly, but soon ran to the front, and led for nearly half the journey, when Polyphemus took charge half a mile from home. Polyphemus, Atareria and Vivo were together well clear of Glengariff. Atareria shook off Vivo, and then Polyphemus, but had to be ridden right out to beat Glengariff by a head. Glengariff finished well and would have won had he been kept closer to the leaders. Electric Handicap With High Disdain out of the way, Valpre was a short-priced favourite for the Electric Handicap. She went to the front with Golden Flower soon after the start and led into the straight. From there on she came on nicely to win by length from Becky Sharp II with Monaloff a neck away, third, and Golden Flower fourth. Trial Hack Tenacre, Inflame, Endorse, and Airway were all well supported in the Trial Hack Handicap. Airway and Endorse led to the straight from Inflame and Annoyer, with Tenacre next. Endorse stopped quickly in the straight, and Airway beat her home by a length and a-half, with Annoyer half a length away. Then came Tenp.cre, fourth, with Joke Form and Bion© next. Tonks Stakes Bright Glow was not as well backed as Talisker for the Tonks Stakes. Blimp and Star Area led nearly all the way from Bright Glow, with Keddar and Mendip always handy, and Talisker well back. Blimp was going better
than Star Area at the home turn, and the latter dropped out there, but Bright Glow challenged Blimp, and beat him home by a length Mendip was a length away third. Keddar fourth and Star Area fifth. Meremere Hack Vaucluse and Fortalice were well backed for the Meremere Hack Handicap. Fortalice and Greenacre led into the straight with Potoleer coming wide out, and Onward and Second Thought handy. Second Thought was in charge half-way along the straight, but Onward finished fast to win by a length. Second Thought was second, two lengths ahead of Fortalice. Greenacre and Ngawahine were next. Normanby Handicap King Midas was favourite in a great, betting race in the Normanby Handicap. Partaga caused considerable delay at the start, and when the field got away and settled down Whenuanui was in charge from Borsalene, King Midas, and Seastar. With half a mile to go, Whenuanui and Monaghan were in charge from Borsalene, King Midas, Orazone, Seast.ar, and Manly. Whenuanui and Monaghan led into the straight, but both .were beaten in the run home. Borsalene and Gold Cure fought out the finish. Borsalene winning by a length. Whenuanui was a head away third, and Orazone fourth. Waimate Handicap Joy King and Llanore carried big money in the Waimate Handicap. Joy King was left several lengths, and Banket led to the turn, where Llanore came away, and won easily by four lengths from Joy King, with Banket third, and Te Atiawa fourth. Llanore weighed in 411 b light, and the race was awarded to Joy King. Inaha Hack There was plenty of money for most of the seven runners in the last race, Calamine being the actual favourite. Miss Mercia was the early leader, being joined at the half-mile by Whisogne, and they were together coming into the straight, their nearest attendants being Acred, Gasnapper, Spearmiss and Kawhakina. Over the last bit Calamine appeared on the scene, and finishing brilliantly, secured the verdict by a neck over Kawhakina, who is coming back to form. Gasnapper was right up third, and Spearmiss and Acred followed. Following are the results: Okaiawa Hurdles, of £180; 1£ miles.— 2 Atareria, 10.4 (P. Adams), 1; 3 Glengariff, 10.0 (M.
