Queen Arch and Siaosi Fight It Out

KEEN MAT AM AT A CONTESTS

IS a five-horse race for the Matamata Cup on Saturday, Queen Arch and the warm favourite, Siaosi, had a thrilling' duel over the last furlong, the pair running neck and neck to the judge, with Queen Arch getting a head decision. This was only one of many stirring events at the popular Matamata fixture.

The elements were most kind to the Matamata Racing Club, for a fine warm day developed as the afternoon wore on to rain, but it held off till just after the last race. The conditions prior to this were excellent, and it is small wonder that a record attendance was registered. The course was in good order, and the sport as good as could be wished for. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator handling £19,730 10s, against £19,689 10s last year, an increase of £4l. The club was rather unfortunate in that the Cup field was of one-dividend proportions, with the result that the pool on this event was the smallest of the day, whereas with two dividends it might have been the biggest betting

The management of the fixture was all that could be desired, everything passing off with that smoothness so essential to the success of any race meeting. The president, Mr. J. W. Anderson, presented the handsome gold cup to Mr. R. B. Hines, owner of Queen Arch, winner of the Matamata Cup, while Mr. J. Paterson received a fine sliver cup attached to the Okoroire Hack Cup event, won by his promising performer Hakanoa. Notes on the racing and details of results follow. Tirau High-weight Schorr (£461) and Te Koroke (£454) were prime fancies for the Tirau High-weight Handicap, but there was good support for Glena Bay (£374). Prince Lu, who won from end to end, carried £213. Ashleigh, Schorr, Maurea, Glena Bay and Star Comet followed Prince Lu from the barrier, but along the back the latter increased his lead to live lengths, his nearest attendants being Maurea, Ripon Abbey, Te Koroke and Schorr, Glena Bay and Star Comet being last. Approaching the straight Prince Lu was six lengths out in front of Maurea, Ripon Abbey. Te Koroke, Schorr and Glena Bay, but the leader tired badly in the run home, although he battled on to win by a length from the favourite, who beat Te Koroke out of second dividend by half a length. Glena Bay was fourth, followed by Maurea, Ripon Abbey, Star Comet, Ashleigh and Ah Wera. Waharoa Handicap Hakanoa £512 was a firm favourite for the Waharoa Handicap, with good support for Te Waka £352 and Hone Heke £314. Lord Hopetoun dwelt at the start and Te Waka was chopped out, Hone Heke leading away from Always, Whaka King, Queen Comet and Hakanoa. At the five-furlong post Whaka King was clear of Hone Heke, Hakanoa, Always, Queen Comet and Lord Hopetoun, but when the home turn was reached the favourite was just in behind Whaka King, with Hone Heke, Queen Comet and Lord Hopetoun following at intervals. Hakanoa took charge at the half-distance, going on to win very easily by two lengths from Whaka King, who stayed on to defeat Always by half a length. Then in order came Hone Heke, Queen Comet, Lord Hopetoun and Te Waka. Matamata Cup Siaosi £1,122 was made a hot favourite in the Matamata Cup, but he went down by a narrow margin to Queen Arch, who was next choice with £437. Regent led out of the straight from Tinoiti, Red Day, Siaosi and Queen Arch, and when the five furlongs

post was passed the favourite was running beside Tinoiti just behind Regent. Crossing the top Queen Arch went up on the outer, and Siaosi got a run on the rails, the pair turning for home together four lengths clear of Red Day. A battle royal ensued right to the box, where Queen Arch gained the verdict by a head, with Red Day eight lengths back, followed by Regent and Tinoiti. Hinuera Handicap The Hinuera Handicap resulted in a “boil-over,” the little-fancied Flapperette scoring and returning her supporters a dividend in the vicinity of a score, there being only £ 94 invested on her. Unoco £544. Flying Tresses £375 and Archileen £361 carried the money. Beginning smartly, Flying Tresses piloted Crown Arch, Day Guide, Unoco and Swift Light, but at the half-mile Day Guide joined issue with Flying Tresses, this pair having Flapperette, Unoco, The Jack Jumper and Crown Arch as their nearest attendants. There was little change from there on, a fine finish resulting in Flapperete beating Archileen by half a length, The Jack Juniper being a further half-length back in third place. Crown Arch was fourth, followed by Unoco, Day Guide, Flying Tresses and Dainty Arcli. Hack Cup Notwithstanding that lie had won a race earlier in the day, Hakanoa (£449) was third choice for the Hack Cup, better backed ones being Glen Star £7BS, and Black Maire £630. From an even start Glen Star led out of the straight, closely followed by Black Maire, Luminary, Always, Hakanoa and Loveband, and moving down the back and past the half-mile post, Glen Star and Black Maire were making play from Hakanoa, Luminary, Ripon Abbey and Loveband. The field drew together nearing the turn, and as they swept round the bend Hakanoa had his head in front of Black Maire, Glen Star and Ripon Abbey, who were all abreast. A stirring finish eventuated. Hakanoa holding his position to stall off Black Maire by a neck, with Glen Star also a neck away in third place. Ripon Abbey was a fair fourth, and

then came Loveband, Luminary, Always, Furrie and Joy Day. Railway Handicap There was solid backing for Macroom in the Railway Handicap and she duly won in comfortable fashion. The money entrusted to her amounted to £7OB, next in demand being Takutama, £559, and Town Bird, £509. Town Bird dwelt a bit at the start, Takutama having charge early from Atapai, Mai croom and New Moon, but at the end of two furlongs Town Bird had rushed to the front, to pilot Atapai, New Moon and Macroom, who had. little between them. Town Bird and Atapai were clear of New Moon and Macroom at the bend for home, but when straightened up Macroom finished strongly, not being exerted to any extent, to beat Town Bird b.y a length and a-quarter. Three parts of a length further back was New Moon in third place, followed by Takutama, Atapai and Regent. Putaruru Stakes Although there was sufficient material in the Putaruru Stakes to provide an upset, backers were on the mark, and the favourite, Te Taone (£355) won nicely. Silver Division, £348, and Asmodeus, £332, were also sought after, while the second horse, Kiri, had £55 invested on him, returning nearly double figures. Valstreet, on the rails began best, and led out from Katuscha. Kiri, Lady MesfoT, Silver Division, and Te Taone. Crossing the top, Valstreet was joined by Valorie, this pair showing tho way into the home stretch to Kiri, Silver Division, and Te Taone. The last-named did best in the run to the judge, and defeated the outsider, Kiri, by a length, Valstreet being only a neck away in third Oscar was fourth, and then practically on terms followed Snow Prince and Asmodeus. Walton Handicap Half the field failed to come out for the final event, and backers literally fell over themselves to be on Lucy Rose, who was finally sent out favourite with £1,079. There was also some good money for The Lamb £782, with drops to Some Lady £342 and Town Bird £295. The latter got the worst of the start, and when they had settled down Lucy Rose and The Lamb were in the van from Tinoiti and Boomerday. This was the order along the back, with Town Bird improving his position at the half-mile. Lucy Rose and The Lamb were together at the turn for home, with Tinoiti and Some Lady next. At the bottom of the straight the favourite was in charge, but she was not to have it all her own way, for Town Bird challenged resolutely over the last 100yds, and in a rattling finish the favourite pulled through by a head. Some Lady was a length away third, and The Lamb a moderate fourth, with Tinoiti last. The following are the results: ► TIRAU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Of £80; Si furlongs S—PRINCE LU (A.
