FIRE AT WHANGAREI

MAN’S NARROW ESCAPE (From Our Oven Correspondent) WHANGAREI, To-day. A four-roomed house, occupied by Mr. W. J. Irwin, caretaker of the High School, was practically destroyed by fire early this morning, and was only saved from total destruction by the prompt action of the fire brigade. The furniture became a total loss. It was insured for £l5O. Mr. Irvine, the only occupant, woke in suffocating smoke, and only escaped a few moments before the whole interior burst into flames.
