A special meeting- of the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce executive appointed a special committee consisting of Messrs. A. S. Laird, M. H. Wilks. A. J. Langmuir, It. F. Harris and W. Thomas to investigate the. freeholding position in the borough -with the ultimate view of influencing the Government in the direction of a reduction in freehold values. It was pointed out that, under The present position, no deduction had been made for the large amount of loan money spent on improvements in the town, and this was being paid for by the property owners, in addition to the freeholding cost. * * * A representative team of bowlers from Taumarunui tried conclusions with the Taihape Club, and was defeated by 80 to 70. The open clay bird shoot concluded by the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club resulted: Handicap sweepstake, 12 birds: W. Peck (16yds), 12 birds, 1; G. E. Bretherton and J. Fitt tied for second, with 11 breaks. Fifteen-bird handicap sweepstake: J. Wiske (14yds), 15 breaks, 1; Hughes (16) and W. Peck (15), tied f®r second with 14 breaks. Twenty-one-bird sweepstake handicap: G. E. Bretherton (15yds), 21 birds, 1; W. Hughes (17) and W. Peck (19) tied for second with 20 breaks. Xine-bird handicap sweepstake: W. Peck (20yds), 9 birds, 1; R. F. Harris. F. E. Cox, G. E. Bretherton and T. Wor*ley tied for second with seven breaks, w Peck won the medal presented for the highest “first-barrel” score. Peck alf= f ’ secured Mr. K. E. Cox’s cup for the highest aggregate score for the day. his total being 55 (possible 57). * * *
In the first South Auckland Shield match played between Taumarunui Association and Maniapoto Association cricket representatives, at Taumarunui. home team (holders of the trophy) defeated Maniapoto by the narrow margin of 25 runs
