“I AM IMPRESSED”
MINISTER AND HARBOUR BRIDGE CONFERENCE NEEDED •’I am impressed with the desirability of a bridge across the harbour,” the Minister of Marine, the Hon. J. G. Cobbe, told a deputation representing the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association this morning. “However, it is not the policy of the Government to set up Royal Commissions. A conference or departmental inquiry would get down to facts. I shall discuss the question with the Minister of Public Works" Prior to the delivery of this opinion the Minister was addressed by Mr. A. Harris, M.P., who traced the history of the scheme and asked for an inquiry before the spending of £SOO on a survey. He was supported by Mr. C. G. Godfrey, secretary of the Marine Department, and Mr. G. O’Halloran, vicepresident of the association. Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Devonport, stressed the advantages of the bridge from the point of view of increasing North Shore population. Mr. R. H. Greville referred to the boon a bridge would confer upon motorists and the possibility of increased traffic that would make the bridge self-supporting.
