ORDER OUT OF CHAOS
EFFORTS IN CHINA MILLIONS FACE STARVATION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Wednesday. A tragic description of existing conditions in China was given to-day by ►Mr. E. Ainsworth, formerly connected with the oil industry in Asia, who has just returned from the Far East. He said the Chinese people are faced with the worst famine experienced in their country for many years. Five provinces are stricken with famine and it is possible that 10,000,000 Chinese will perish of starvation. Three parties have combined to form the Nationalist Government at Nanking, and they are doing their utmost to create order out of chaos. • The prospects of famine in the provinces of Shantung, Hunan, Chansi. Shensi and Kansu are awful, said Air. Ainsworth. “Roots, leaves and bark are being eaten by the inhabitants. To make matters worse civil war is being continued in various districts. Mr Ainsworth, his wife and three daughters lived for many years in the Hunan Province. They are now going to take up farming in New Zealand in order to escape from the misery ol their recent environment m China.
